The gossip site TMZ released an audio recording of an argument between Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling and his girlfriend V. Stiviano. In the alleged recording obtained by TMZ, Sterling made some racially insensitive comments that were offensive, disturbing and straight-up disrespectful. According to the audio tape, the heated argument was fueled by Sterling disapproval of V. Stiviano, who is Black and Mexican, taking pictures with black people and posting the photos on Instagram. In fact, Sterling went on by saying he doesn’t want her to bring black people to his games including NBA Hall of Famer and legend Magic Johnson.
Among the racist comments that were made by Sterling he also went on by saying blacks or minority are only acceptable to sleep with. The racist diatribe includes comments like:
“It bothers me a lot that you want to broadcast that you’re associating with black people. Do you have to?” (3:30)
“You can sleep with [black people]. You can bring them in, you can do whatever you want. The little I ask you is not to promote it on that … and not to bring them to my games.” (5:15)
“I’m just saying, in your lousy f******* Instagrams, you don’t have to have yourself with, walking with black people.” (7:45)
“…Don’t put him [Magic] on an Instagram for the world to have to see so they have to call me. And don’t bring him to my games.” (9:13)
While the NBA is conducting a full investigation regarding this matter one should be aware of Sterling’s history of allegedly racist behavior.
In 2005, Sterling settled a lawsuit following allegations of racially-motivated firing of employees. In 2009, he agreed to pay over $2.73 million to settle a housing discrimination suit for refusing to rent apartments to Blacks and Latinos. He was then later sued by the United States Supreme Court again for the same reason. In addition, Sterling was also sued by former Clippers executive Elgin Baylor for racial discrimination.
Nevertheless, if the Los Angeles Lakers Kobe Bryant was fined $100,000 for using a Gay slur then what actions will the NBA take against Donald Sterling for his racially disturbed comments?
